Welcome to Olango Island, a charming destination located in the Philippines. If you’re seeking a getaway filled with natural wonders, exciting activities, and delicious cuisine, Olango Island invites you to explore its beauty.
In this comprehensive travel guide, we’ll delve into what makes Olango Island a must-visit destination, covering its top attractions, beaches, activities, culinary delights, camping spots, and accommodations. To help you prepare, here are some things you should know before going to Olango
Things to Know Before Going to Olango Island
Best Time To Visit Olango Island
The best time to visit Olango Island is between December and May, which is the dry season in the Philippines. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and dry, and the sea is calm, making it perfect for outdoor activities like island hopping, snorkeling, and diving.
Olango Island’s bird sanctuary is excellent. When you go bird viewing, go while the water is low (ask hotel staff when to go). Of course, the best times are in the early morning or late afternoon. I discovered that the best time to take shots of the scenery was during high tide.
Quick side note: Don’t go to the Island if you can’t stand on motion sickness or sea sickness especially if you take the pump boat (small boat) this usually occurs if there’s heavy rain with slight wind or a monsoon as the sea is quite shaky.
How To Get To Olango Island Philippines
Luckily getting to the Island is not that difficult; it’s accessible by both air and sea. Here are some ways to get to Olango Island:
By Air:
The nearest airport to the island is Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), which is located on the neighboring Island of Mactan. If you arrive at the airport, you will need to take a taxi or a private car to Mactan Wharf, where you can catch a ferry to the Island.
By Sea:
Several ferry services operate between the main Island, which is Mactan and Olango Island.
There are two different ports that I know to get to the Island. These are the Angasil port (near Mactan Newtown) and the Hilton port (near Movenpick Hotel). The ferry ride takes approximately 30 minutes from Angasil Port to Sta. Rosa Port and the fare is relatively cheap.
Port Location from Lapu Lapu City to Olango Island:
- Angasil Port – Angasil Rd, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu
- Hilton Port – Punta Engaño Rd, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu
Port Location from Olango Island to Lapu Lapu City:
- Sta Rosa Port – Santa Rosa, Lapu-lapu City, Olango Is., Cebu, Philippines, Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines
You can also take a pump boat from other ports in Cebu, such as Cebu City, to Olango Island.
Getting Around Olango Island
Getting to Olango Island is relatively easy, and you can choose the mode of transportation that best suits your needs and budget.
Pedicabs—motorcycles with sidecars—are the Island’s main form of transportation. However, bringing a motorcycle or bicycle to the Island is practical. The main roads are paved but narrow, and the ferries can carry those vehicles. Just slow down and watch for potholes, animals, and kids playing in the street.
But to give you a more detailed guide, here are the most common ways to get around the Island;
Habal-habal: This is a popular mode of transportation on the Island. Habal-habal is a motorcycle taxi that can carry one or two passengers. It’s a convenient and affordable way to get around the Island, and you can find them parked in several locations around the Island.
Tricycle: Tricycles are also a common mode of transportation on the Island. They are motorbikes with a sidecar that can accommodate up to four passengers. You can negotiate the price with the driver before getting on, and they can take you to different locations around the Island.
Bicycles: Bicycles are available for rent in several locations on the Island. It’s a great way to explore the Island at your own pace, and you can cover more ground than walking.
The most popular bike rental on the Island is the Olango Mybike. Make sure to check out their Facebook account. The people there are also very friendly.
Walking: The Island is relatively small, and walking is a great way to explore it at a leisurely pace. You can stroll along the beaches, visit the local fishing villages, and enjoy the Island’s natural beauty.
